Frequently Asked Questions What is occupational therapy? Def: Occupational Therapy (OT) is a related service that focuses on helping people function to their fullest potential in their environment. It may be needed due to a physical, emotional, or cognitive impairment. What does an occupational therapist do with school children? The "occupation" of children is to attend school and do their work, interact with others, and play. Occupational therapists in schools work with students to make sure they have the appropriate underlying skills so they can achieve academically and enable them to succeed. Who can benefit from occupational therapy? Children with: Developmental co-ordination disorders Developmental delays ADD / ADHD Autistic Spectrum Disorder ( ASD) Aspergers Dyspraxia Dyslexia Or maybe having problem with one or more of the following (but who do not have a specific diagnosis): Handwriting Visual processing Memory Motor skills Auditory Sequencing skills Organisational skills Engaging in learning Completing work on time What about behavioural issues? Often behaviours can be a symptom of underlying difficulties. The child may ‘act out’ in an attempt to avoid activities that they may be finding challenging. ‘Failing to attempt’ may be perceived as ‘easier’ for the child than attempting and possibly failing. Looking into concerns and gaining further understanding of what potential difficulties the child is having can assist in explaining behaviours for those involved at school and at home.
